The region of Shirvan is known for its rich carpet making traditions and is considered home to some of the finest of all Caucasian carpets.
These carpets are knotted using high quality wool and/or silk and typically feature the "boteh" or "paisley" motif. This teardrop-shaped design is believed to represent fertility, life and eternity. Other common motifs found in Shirvan carpets include geometric shapes, flowers and animal figures.
The wool used is typically dyed using natural dyes made from plants and insects. Common colours used in Shirvan carpets include red, blue, green and yellow.
In addition to their beauty, Shirvan carpets also have a cultural significance. They were often used as dowry items and considered a symbol of wealth and status. Today, Shirvan carpets continue to be an important part of Azerbaijan's cultural heritage and are highly prized by collectors and carpet enthusiasts around the world.
Patina
Our collection of Patina carpets is comprised of older Persian carpets that all show signs of natural wear and ageing. The carpets are carefully selected with the intention of preserving their cultural heritage and breathing new life into them. All our Patina carpets are washed before undergoing a thorough inspection. If any signs of damage are found these are attended to, and if the pile is unevenly trimmed it is gently polished down to achieve an even pile and add a natural sheen to the carpet.
The result is a one-of-a-kind carpet that still possesses all the qualities of an older hand-knotted carpet. A beautiful carpet with a genuine feel that has intentionally been allowed to retain a distinct patina appearance: to be discovered and admired by yet another generation to come.
